St. Patrick's Day Craft for Kids

Every year around St. Patrick's Day we make this simple shamrock craft.  We pretty much always have the supplies on hand, and there is very little prep time required.  I especially enjoy watching the progression of my boys' artwork throughout the years.  They each have their own way of creating, that's for sure.  I love how their little personalities show through their art.  

How to Make Shamrocks with Peppers

Supplies:

• butcher paper or white cardstock
• green tempura paint
• paint brushes (for adding stems)
• glitter (optional)
• green pepper, sliced in half

Despite the fact that we do this every year, seeing the print the pepper makes on the paper always thrills my little guys.

I love how J-Bug (4) always has to make his so precise.  He told me he needs to push really hard to make sure all the paint gets on the paper.

Sometimes we use foam brushes for the shamrock stems, and other times we use paint brushes.  This year I left out a variety of brush sizes.  I love that J-Bug chose a large brush.

JZ (6) went with a completely different approach, as you can see.

In case you weren't sure, we focus much more on the process around here than the product.  JZ's process was quite messy, and I welcome messy exploration.   Here are tips for messy play as well as laundry tips to avoid stains and keep clothes bright.

No JZ's paintings don't look like shamrocks, but he fully enjoyed the entire process.  This is what we aim for in all our projects.

J-Bug does care quite a bit about his end product, but as you can see, he also likes to add his own flare.
