A few months ago I saw a clever idea on one of the blogs I follow, Toddler Approved. To see the details of the Monster Truck (Letter) Mash and for other awesome toddler activities, be sure and click the link.
I put my own spin on the game for the ages and stages of my guys. I wrote JZ's sight words on paper bags, blew air into them, then secured them with a twist tie.
Using painter's tape I made a track for the monster trucks.
When JZ got to a bag he had to read the word, then he got
to SMASH it!
To include JM in the fun I put letters on some of the bags, so he named the letter before smashing his bags.
In addition to being a great letter and sight word review for the boys, this game encouraged playing together, problem solving, and respect for each other. They had to decipher who each bag was for when they approached with a truck. Then, if they came to a bag intended for the other, they had to find another path.
It was sweet hearing them shout, "This one is yours, come on, this way!" to each other.
I had intended to make two separate tracks and keep the sight words on one and the letters on the other. I spaced while taping the paper bags down, but I'm glad I messed up. I liked the teamwork better than my original plan.
KO had to smash a few bags, too.
