Outdoor Shaving Cream Play Pool

Shaving Cream in the Play Pool

We love adding sensory materials to the play pool for summer sensory fun!  Shaving cream never fails to entertain my boys.  It is such an inexpensive and fun sensory medium.  Adding shaving cream to the play pool was a simple way to entertain the kids (and me!) all afternoon.  The best part is that shaving cream rinses away clean in a matter of seconds.

After JZ (4) added one can of shaving cream to the play pool he climbed in and gingerly started playing.

We play with shaving cream on a regular basis but never like this.  Most often JZ asks for a can of shaving cream and a bin.  He loves running his hands through it and usually plays for a good hour or so.  Another favorite is mixing with food coloring or liquid water color paint in the bath.  Before long JZ was fully engaged in the shaving cream play, and most of his body was covered.

J-Bug (3) didn't need much encouragement to join his brother in the play pool when he woke up from his nap.

They kept saying they were "ice skating".  I joined them after putting the camera down, and it was indeed slippery!

To read about the importance of messy play and why I not only encourage but instigate it, read the messy play post in my Child's Play 101 series.

Please note: I stood close by with a dry towel to wipe any shaving cream that got near their eyes.  Before getting in to play I instructed them to be careful not to wipe their face when they had shaving cream on their hands.  I kept the hose nearby for any time they wanted their hands clean.

Clean up was a cinch and only added to the fun.  JZ happily filled the play pool with a little water to add to the summer sensory fun.

It couldn't be much more simple than this! A play pool + two cans of shaving cream + and a hose = hours of messy, sensory fun in the sun.

  5. That looks super fun! I love shaving foam play, but unfortunately my kids have very sensitive skin, so we have to make it short and sweet with shaving foam. Otherwise, I'd be doing this tomorrow! Thanks for sharing at the Outdoor Play Party :-)
