Firefly Craft with Kiwi Crate
I have been wanting to sign up for Kiwi Crate for months now, so when I read about their Summer of Giving program I jumped at the chance to be a part of it. I ordered a three month subscription to test out the boxes for myself, so I could give an accurate review. I was not disappointed. Kiwi Crate has the best kids crafts and projects.
When our first box arrived, the big boys and I sat at their table and went through the contents together. There were enough supplies for each boy to do two projects. (I ordered the extra sibling set, so each boy could have his own.) Other than a container of water I did not have to use a single other supply. Everything needed was in the box including paint, brushes, sharpened pencils, tape and anything else needed to create. A new pair of FISKARS scissors for each boy was in the box.
I asked the boys which project they wanted to do first. We started by painting bugs. Included in the kit were several sponge shapes. They were flat and grew in water. This was half of the fun! "Mom a butterfly!"
The sponges were in shapes to make different bugs. Those of you who follow me know that we focus on process art and free creativity without a specific outcome. I was delighted to discover that the supplies easily lent themselves to free creative expression. No J-Bug's designs didn't turn out like bugs, but he was very proud of what he painted. He had fun, used his imagination, and got the bonus of working on fine motor skills.
Whenever we do a project I encourage the boys to assist in the clean up. Rinsing out the sponges was no chore for them! Once dry we added them to our painting stash to use again and again.
Next they decorated their fireflies. Again, even though the desired result was a firefly, they had freedom to decorate and embellish as they chose. We even have some leftover supplies for a future project.
Do you like how the firefly has four eyes? Both boys wanted to use all four. The fact that each kit contained four demonstrates Kiwi Crates commitment to details. What a bummer it would be to have a one eyed firefly if one got lost? With a couple extra thrown in, no need to fret.
And now? The coolest part. These fireflies really fly! Well, they run on a string. We tied one end to the baby gate at the bottom of the stairs, so each boy could control his own. They made their fireflies fly back and fourth for hours.
After just one box, we are hooked for sure! I imagine we will be life long customers. Clear, step by step instructions are included as well as learning cards and suggestions for conversation while creating. The boys learned knew information about bugs all while having a great time.

What a fun activity. I never would have thought to put the fireflies on a string to make them fly, but it works so well. Can you sign up for these kits once in the year and get them several times or do you have to sign up each time you want them?
