Autumn Jello Sensory Bin

Recipe for Play for Fall

We love jello play, so I decided to put together a seasonal sensory bin full of jello.  I wanted to really capture the essence of fall.

I used knox gelatin and added apple juice to one batch.  I added orange food coloring and  cinnamon to the other.  Once set I cut both batches into tiny pieces and mixed them in a sensory bin.

All four of my boys ages 5, 3, and 15 months loved it.  Tank (15 months) was especially enthralled with the Jello, and he ate much less than I expected.

After playing I stored the jello in an airtight container, so we could play with it again for several days.

Other ways we've played with Jello:
If you are a bit unsure about playing with food I understand the hesitation. Here is a post I wrote about the benefits of letting children play with food and how to minimize waste, Child's Play 101 - Fun with Food.

  2. I don't know that I would like to play with the jello....I would rather eat it. ;) I can see how kids would enjoy it, though.

  3. ooh fun! Do they get to eat it too? I have a child in my class that would hate this. He is very tactile and doesn't like to touch anything squishy, but it would be a good experience for him. I like to challenge him sometimes. :) Thanks for sharing at Mom's Library!
