Feed the Monster - Literacy Game

Literacy Game for Preschool and Kindergarten

JZ (5) is doing All About Reading level 1.  Each lesson he has to read word cards.  This is not his favorite part of his reading lessons.  He loves making and reading words with the letter tiles, and he loves reading the books out loud to me.  He is not a fan of the word cards.  I can understand, because it is more fun to read a story than to read random words one at a time from a card.

To make the practice fun I grabbed the monster he had designed and told him to read the cards then feed the hungry monster.

Using the phonogram cards from All About Reading, I had J-Bug (3) feed his monster alphabet cards.  He named the letter then fed his monster.

It's amazing how much more fun reading the word cards became.  JZ was very dramatic about each one, "Chomp, chomp, chomp."  J-Bug spoke in a high voice for his monster saying, "Feed me, I'm so hungry!"

When JZ finished his stack of word cards he actually asked for more.  Usually he is relieved to be done.

You can easily replicate this activity at home even if you aren't doing All About Reading.  Here are the details from our Milk Jug Monsters.  Just type or print the words you want your child to read, and cut them apart.  This would be a fun way to practice sight words!  We will have to do that next.

  1. These are pretty cute! I will have to try it with the girls; they will probably want me to try and make them into ponies though!
