Color Recognition Game for Toddlers

Last week I posted about Educational Gross Motor Activities to do with kids to make learning fun. In addition to making learning fun, combining learning with movement helps children retain what they have learned.  Gross motor activities for toddlers are generally very simple and don't require a lot of prep time.  My little guys are at the perfect age to start learning their colors, so I set up a color recognition gross motor game for them.

How to Teach Color Recognition Through Play

Supplies:

• sidewalk chalk

I used the chalk to draw large dots to form a circle.  I kept the colors simple using orange, green, pink, yellow and blue.  You could also use homemade sidewalk chalk paint or even erupting sidewalk chalk paint.

The best way to get a toddler involved in a gross motor game is to start playing it yourself.  Young children almost always want to join in the fun.  As I hopped onto a dot I called out the color.

It was so cute watching Tank and Peanut (20 months) try to hop with two feet in the air.  They did their best!

Please note that they didn't start calling out the color names.  The goal of this game was to have fun.  If they happened to pick something up while building gross motor skills then great!

After hopping for about fifteen minutes Tank curled up on the ground.  I guess he was tired.  I was, too!
