Activities for Toddlers {Rock Sensory Bin}

Simple Rock Sensory Bin for Toddlers

JZ (5) and I just wrapped up a unit on rocks.  I do my best to create activities for toddlers to go along with our studies whenever possible, so my twin toddlers can participate.  This rock sensory bin was incredibly simple to put together, and it provided many opportunities for learning.

I set out two containers.  in one I put a little sand and a few rocks.  In the other I put sand, rocks and a small amount of water.

Activities for toddlers ideally include opportunities to explore and learn.  These sensory bins provided many textures for Tank and Peanut (20 months) to feel.

Tank loved dropping rocks into the bin with water and watching the splash made by the rocks.

Sometimes the most simple activities for toddlers provide the best entertainment.  Toddlers learn best through play, and this rock sensory bin was a great example of keeping it simple.  I was with my boys the entire time they played with the rock sensory bin.  Always supervise young children.

  1. I agree about simple activities often being the most fun for the little ones! Great idea.

  2. Since my family lives no where near a beach, I think this is the perfect thing to get some resemblance of beach fun. Thanks for the idea.

  3. This is a great idea! I haven't done water with sand. I remember loving that feeling of wet sand when I was little. I'm adding it to my list for a messy learning program I hold at my library.

  4. That's something my boys would love! They love dirt and rocks.

  5. What a really simple idea & yet I bet they spent ages exploring this. Thanks for joining in the Outdoor Play Party with this post (and the others too).
