Shaving Cream and Watercolors

Sensory Activity with Shaving Cream and Watercolors

Beautiful sensory play and art with shaving cream.

One of our favorite sensory activities is playing with shaving cream, and one of our favorite art mediums is liquid watercolors.  For a super simple sensory activity we love to combine the two!

How to Make Art with Shaving Cream and Watercolors

Supplies:
Colorful shaving cream sensory play that requires very little prep!

Directions:  I fill the squeezy bottles with about 2 tablespoons of liquid watercolors.  Food coloring may be used in place of the watercolors.  I don't actually measure.  I just eyeball the amount.  Then I top off the squeezy bottles with water and set up an invitation for colorful sensory play.

Simple sensory play that builds fine motor skills

JZ (6) always likes to be the one to squirt the shaving cream.  I am happy to let him since it builds fine motor skills.  Squeezing the bottles is also great for fine motor skills, and it's so much fun!

Tank and Peanut (24 months) often go through their watercolors quickly and ask for refills.  I don't usually add more color to the bottles.  The residual color blends with the water for a lighter shade.  Peanut almost always runs off to find our plastic bowls.  He loves to squirt into a bowl then dump into the sensory bin.

JZ and J-Bug (4) love running their hands through the shaving cream mixture even while their baby brothers continue to squirt in color.

I love the marbling created when combining shaving cream and watercolors.  Sometimes we stop here and use the mixture with foam brushes on paper like paint.

Other days the boys get caught up in the sensory activity and get good and messy.  Both shaving cream and liquid watercolors rinse away very easily.  If the mess concerns you here are my best tips and tricks for messy play as well as laundry tips to avoid stains.  Watercolors stain the hands for a short time but usually come completely clean within a few hours.

  3. Hello Allison,
"I love the marbling created when combining shaving cream and watercolors.  Sometimes we stop here and use the mixture with foam brushes on paper like paint."

I want to ask you if you let the boys use white A4 paper sheets, at the point they got the colors all marbled
    If all colors are blend together, my kids loose interest and;
    go messy on eachother
or leave the tub with cream as it is
or want to start allover again.
I also let them often use the foam brushes, but we use another way too,
Let them put the paper in flat (same as normal marble papers),
push a little in the marble cream, take it out, leave aside to dry... to get marble paper with a texture.
This way we go on playing and most of these marbled paper creations, we use again when they all dried up, we fold and craft with these papers.
Maybe that's something for your boys to try too? While you love the Marbling Colors!
Thanks again for this lovely view overseas ;-)
    Best regards, Elvira
