You know how much we love making homemade paint! A few recent favorites include kool aid puffy paint, scented sidewalk chalk paint, and frozen smoothie paint. The other day I was flipping through the Discount School Supply catalog, and I saw these cool confetti finger paints. I was tempted to buy a set, but then I realized I could likely make my own confetti paint. I love experimenting and creating new recipes for play, and this confetti paint could not have been more simple!

Supplies:

Directions: Fill the container with hair gel, add food coloring and confetti, and mix. How simple is that? I get my hair gel at Dollar Tree to save money. *Update* A reader commented with a concern about using hair gel with young children. This base recipe for fall sticky paints would be a perfect and safe alternative!

Once the paints were all mixed up, I set up an invitation to paint for Tank and Peanut (24 months).

As always, Peanut was the first to start creating.

It's perfect both for finger painting and painting with brushes.

I wasn't sure how the hair gel would dry, but it turned out beautiful just like store bought paint.

This looks wonderful. However, have you read the ingredients on the bottles of these hair products? Hair-raising, if you'll excuse the pun. Kids hands will absorb these chemicals, and their tiny bodies are much more vulnerable to the toxity.
ReplyDeleteYou can purchase unused bottles at stores that carry products for salons. I've even seen them in the hair care aisle of the dollar store near my apartment.
DeleteI think this would be fine for older children and perhaps "mature" younger ones. At the end of the day, if you're monitoring them and are careful to wash their hands after I'm sure it's fine.

ReplyDeleteYou can get the confetti at craft stores. There is also an Amazon link in the post. I mixed all the ingredients together myself. Hope that helps. :)
DeleteUnfortunately the confetti and glitter (I added this on my own) didn't stick to the paper! Thinking of mixing in a little glue?? Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteYes try adding some glue. Ours stuck to the paper and dried well, but we threw away the artwork shortly after painting. I'm not sure how it would have held up long term.
