Recipe for Play - Apple Soap Foam

Have you noticed we've been a bit obsessed with apple scented sensory play lately?  It's just so perfect this time of year!  A few of our apple scented favorites have been candy apple rice, fall sticky paints, fall playdough, fall finger paints, apple printing with erupting sidewalk chalk paint, and apple pie dough.  I have a few more fun ideas using apples, but today I needed something fast and simple.  It was one of those days.  I decided to whip up a batch of soap foam!  To go along with our apple fun I made it in fun apple scents and colors, perfect for fall sensory play.

How to Make Apple Scented Soap Foam

Supplies:

• dish soap
• water
• food coloring or liquid watercolors
• cinnamon
• apple flavoring
• gold glitter
• Vitamix (or other mixer)

Directions:  I added a tablespoon or two of Dawn followed by about a small amount of water.  I didn't measure.  Then I added the scents and color I wanted for each batch.  I made apple cinnamon green, candy apple red and golden delicious yellow.  For the green I just sprinkled some cinnamon into the mix.  The whole house smelled like apple pie while it was mixing.  Yum!  I added apple flavor to the red, but honestly it took quite a bit of flavor to overpower the smell of dish soap.  I think in the future I will stick to dry spices for soap foam.  The yellow wasn't scented, but I added gold glitter to make it really sparkle.  For each batch I secured the lid and turned the Vitamix to high and let it run for a couple of minutes.  The sound of the motor changes when the soap foam is ready.  *Please note*  The soap foam is warm or even hot when you first take it out of the Vitamix.  Take care to ensure that it is a safe temperature before allowing children to touch.

Peanut (26 months) was the first to reach into the bin of soap foam.

The golden delicious yellow was my favorite, because of the sparkles.  

JZ (6) was so cute when he asked me if it was okay to mix the foam.  (As if I would ever give them something and expect the colors to stay separate!)

Tank (26 months) made it a full body experience.  He felt the need to "clean" himself all over.  I failed to get a good photo, because right as he was in his prime Peanut decided he was through and needed his hands rinsed.

Tanks also really enjoyed lifting the bin and watching all the soap foam roll down to the other side.

He did this several times.  He was truly fascinated with it.

Then Peanut thought it would be a good idea to see what happened if they dumped the bin.

Some may see this as a mess, but it was a wonderful sensory activity for exploration and discovery.  Tank proceeded to cover the bottom of the bin with soap.

One of the best parts about using dish soap for sensory play is that it washes clean so easily!  After rinsing everyone's hands I added water to the bin.  This prompted more sensory exploration.  Once they were done exploring I rinsed the soap foam down the driveway with the hose.  It took about two minutes to clean.
