Candy Corn Playdough Recipe

My boys are obsessed with candy corn this time of year, so I knew they would enjoy making candy corn playdough.

Fall Recipe for Play - Candy Corn Playdough

I love making my own playdough, and the simple playdough recipe I use make perfect playdough every single time.  Our fall playdough is still going strong, but with Halloween just around the corner I was inspired to make a batch of candy corn playdough!  This is the perfect fall recipe for play since playdough lasts long, it builds fine motor skills, and what child doesn't love candy corn?  The best part of all is that this candy corn playdough recipe is super simple.  Last spring I discovered the secret to making the perfect playdough.  Seriously, this recipe is fail proof. 

How to Candy Corn Playdough

Ingredients:

• 1 cup flour
• 1/4 cup salt
• 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
• 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
• 3/4 cup boiling water
• liquid watercolors (yellow and orange) or food coloring
• white tempura paint
• vanilla extract (optional)

Directions: Heat the water to a boil. I use a tea kettle. You could also microwave it. While the water is heating add the dry ingredients to the Kitchen Aid. That's my secret to making perfect playdough. I don't do anything fancy. I just add the ingredients to the mixer, and the Kitchen Aid does its magic! The playdough turns out perfect every single time.  I use the paddle attachment.

Next add the vegetable oil. Once the water boils, add it to the mixer. I made three batches of this recipe and added the colors directly into the Kitchen Aid at the same time that I added the water.  Let the playdough mix on a low speed until it reaches the desired consistency.  I used white paint to get a nice white color.  Without color this playdough recipe will be an off white dough color.  The paint makes it nice and bright.

To make the playdough smell just like candy corn, add vanilla extract.  A small amount goes a long way.  I didn't add any to the white batch of playdough, because I didn't want to change the color.

If you don't have a Kitchen Aid, you can still make this wonderful playdough. Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl, add the oil, add the color, then add the hot water. Mix with a wooden spoon until the dough is cool enough to knead by hand. Knead for a few minutes until a dough is formed.
