Frosting Paint Recipe

Homemade Frosting Paint - Recipe for Play

Frosting paint recipe - art for kids - It's simple to make and dries glossy and gorgeous!

Our latest homemade paint recipe is made from just three ingredients, one of those being water.  Can I tell you how much I love simple recipes for play?  Any paint recipe that can be whipped up in just a few minutes is a hit in my house.  This frosting paint recipe is inspired by the frosting we use when we make sugar cookie cutouts.

Supplies:

Directions:  I poured powdered sugar into small containers.  I didn't measure.  I just added a small amount per container.  Next I added a generous a few drops of color.  I prefer the shads of liquid watercolor paint, however, if I thought my boys might taste the paint I would have opted for food coloring.  I wouldn't recommend this paint recipe for young toddlers or babies since it is made from straight sugar.  This homemade paint is ideal for older toddlers and preschoolers on up.

I slowly added in water, a small amount at a time.  I wanted just enough to dissolve all of the powdered sugar.  I mixed the ingredients well, and then our frosting paints were ready to go.

I set out a few small containers of our rainbow rice to use as sprinkles on the paint.

My older two boys weren't interested in painting today, but Tank and Peanut (32 months) ran right up to the table where I had set out the invitation to create with frosting paint.

The highlight of this art project was the rice sprinkles.

The boys painted a little, sprinkled, painted a little, and sprinkled.

I love the fine motor aspect the rainbow rice brought to the art project.

  1. Can you use Crayola washable paint, or do I need to purchase liquid watercolor paint?

    1. That should work! Just add a small amount at a time until you are happy with the shade.
