Water Science for Kids - Water Power

Going along with our hands on water science activities for kids, we made a simple water fountain to demonstrate water power.  Setting up this demonstration literally took less than five minutes.  The hardest part was finding an empty soda bottle, because we never drink it!  I finally just bought a cheap one from Walmart and dumped the Coke down the drain.

How to Set Up a Water Power Demonstration

Supplies:

• empty 2 liter bottle
• water
• golf tees or tape
• container to catch the water
• pen or sharp object to poke holes 

Directions:  To set up our water power demonstration, my husband cut three holes into an empty two liter soda bottle.

He plugged the holes with golf tees, although tape would also do the trick.

JZ (6) filled up the bottle with water, and my husband held it over the bin.

The boys quickly pulled the tees out of the bottle at the same time, and we watched the water pour out into the bin below.  I asked JZ which hole the water poured out of the fastest.

JZ guessed that the water came out of the top hole the fastest, so we filled the bottle up and did the demo again.  This time he noted that water sprayed out of the bottom hole the fastest.  I explained that the hole on the bottom had all of the water from the entire bottle being pushed down out of it.  After our demo the boys played with the bottle and water bin for awhile, taking advantage of the hot day.
